Laminating epoxies have uses that go way beyond moldmaking. In fact, you are much more likely to see one of these in action than any other form of epoxy. We generally refer to stuff like this as “composites”, and listed below are a few examples: Lamination involves the combination of catalyzed epoxy resin with a reinforcing fabric such as fiberglass, carbon or Kevlar (aramid). Properly constructed, things made this way are very strong and lightweight.

Lamination involves the combination of catalyzed epoxy resin with a reinforcing fabric such as fiberglass, carbon or Kevlar (aramid). Properly constructed, things made this way are very strong and lightweight.

* Automotive - Funny cars and top fuel dragsters are both made of carbon fiber and epoxy. Even street cars are getting into carbon/epoxy because the parts look so cool. Then there’s the Corvette.
* Aerospace - Name a plane being manufactured today that isn’t at least partly built with composites.
* Marine - Boats. Lots of boats.
* Recreational - Carbon fiber golf club shafts and tennis rackets. Bicycles, skis, and I bet you can think of more.
* Medical - Artificial limbs and wheelchairs are both common applications for composite materials Laminates are constructed by:
* Preparing the model
* Applying a properly catalyzed epoxy surface coat and allowing it to reach the proper state of tackiness
* Coating the surface of the mold or part with catalyzed laminating resin
* Applying a thin layer of reinforcing fabric and working it into the coat of resin
* After 2 plies of thin fabric, switch to a heavier weave cloth to speed up the laminating process.

The last step is repeated until the desired laminate thickness is reached (usually around ¼” for molds).
